WHY SHOULD HOME FIRES BE A CONCERN FOR FAMILIES? • More than 80 percent (or 4 out of 5) of Americans do not recognize that home fires are the greatest and most common disaster threat. (American Red Cross) • Only 26 percent of families have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. (American Red Cross) • In the United States, a home fire is reported every 79 seconds, and someone dies from a fire every 135 minutes. (National Fire Protection Association) • Since fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters combined, the Red Cross urges families to use Red Cross resources to develop a fire escape plan and to take steps toward fire prevention and safety. GENERAL FOCUS • Home fires affect Americans from all backgrounds and geographic location...

You may be surprised to learn that...home fires kill more Americans each year than all other disasters combined! Our Chapter spends approximately $1,000 per fire to help a family of four. Within the past 12 months, our Chapter has spent over $200,000 in assistance to fire victims. Home fires are known as the ”silent” disaster. Individual tragedies do not receieve as much media attention as large scale national disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and tsunamies. But, the victims of home fires are just as traumatized, just as displaced and just as in need of our help.
